Driveway replacement and removal, done as one job

The old slab broken out and carted off, the base rebuilt, and a new driveway poured in its place, one crew and one written price for the whole swap.

Most driveway calls on the coast are not for new estates, they are for driveways poured decades ago that have cracked, sunk at the crossover or spalled along the edges. Patching a failed slab buys a season or two; the fix that holds is out and repoured, and it is quoted here as one job with one price.

Why driveways fail here

The usual suspects are under the slab, not in it: base material that was never compacted, mesh that was laid on the ground instead of on chairs, joints cut late or not at all, and water directed at the slab edge for twenty years. Beach side sand lets water through fast; hinterland clay moves between wet and dry seasons. A replacement is the one chance to fix all of it at once, which is why the base gets rebuilt rather than reused.

What the swap includes

Saw cutting and breaking out the old driveway, carting and lawful disposal, base rebuilt and compacted, steel on chairs, a 25 MPa pour at 100mm minimum in the finish you choose, joints cut on planned lines and crossfall set away from the garage. Where the old driveway meets paths, the garage slab or the crossover, the levels are matched so nothing needs a ramp or a grinder afterwards.

Removal on its own

Sometimes the job is just getting concrete out: a dead slab making way for landscaping, or a paved area going back to garden. Break out and removal without a repour is quoted the same way, by the square metre, with disposal included.

The price, plainly

Removal adds $35 to $45 per m2 to the new driveway rates, and the whole replacement is quoted as one figure before anything is booked. The pricing page shows worked examples, and the calculator has a removal option built in. Rates move with site conditions and variations; the number that holds is the written quote after a site measure.

How a job runs

Six steps between enquiry and parking on it

  1. 01

    Site measure

Levels, falls, access and the ground itself, measured at your place. If the block slopes to the garage, drainage is planned now, not discovered at the pour.

  2. 02

    Fixed written quote

One price for the scope measured, with the base, steel and thickness stated in writing. Any crossover approval or estate covenant your job needs is identified here.

  3. 03

    Out with the old

On replacements, the existing driveway is broken out and carted off, and the base is recompacted. New pours start with the ground, not on top of what failed.

  4. 04

    Base, forms and steel

Compacted base to suit sand or clay, forms to the setout, mesh on chairs so it works inside the slab. This day decides how long the driveway lasts.

  5. 05

    Pour and finish

Poured at 25 MPa and finished in one continuous run, timed for the weather. Broom, colour or the finish your covenant requires.

  6. 06

    Cut and cure

Control joints cut on planned lines within a day, then the slab is kept curing. Cars stay off for seven days; the concrete keeps hardening for a month.

Questions

Driveway replacement and removal, answered

What does replacing a driveway cost?

Removal adds $35 to $45 per m2 to the new driveway rate, so a full replacement runs about $135 to $195 per m2 depending on finish and what is coming out. A 45 m2 single driveway typically lands between $6,100 and $8,800 all in. Rates move with site conditions and variations; the number that holds is the written quote after a site measure.

Can you pour over the old driveway instead?

Overlaying an old slab carries its cracks and its levels into the new surface, and it raises the finished height where garages, paths and the crossover meet. Where the old slab has failed, out and repoured is the honest fix, and the quote prices exactly that.

How long is the driveway out of action?

Break out, base and steel are usually a day, the pour and finish another, and then vehicles stay off the new slab for seven days. Street parking for roughly a week and a half is the realistic budget.

Does a replacement need council approval?

Replacing a crossover counts as construction under both councils' rules, even like for like. A standard crossover is self assessed against the council checklist with no permit; a non standard one needs written approval before work starts. Which applies is stated in writing on your quote.
