Driveway pricing, published

The rates below are what driveways actually cost through this site, printed so you can budget before anyone visits and check anyone else's number against them.

FinishPer m2Single driveway, 45 m2Double, 60 m2
Plain grey, broom finish $100 to $115 $4,500 to $5,200 $6,000 to $6,900
Coloured, full depth oxide $110 to $130 $4,950 to $5,850 $6,600 to $7,800
Exposed aggregate finish $135 to $150 $6,100 to $6,750 $8,100 to $9,000
Removal of an existing driveway add $35 to $45 add $1,600 to $2,050 add $2,100 to $2,700

Every figure is supply and install with GST, base and steel in it. Council fees on non standard crossovers sit outside and get itemised. Rates move with site conditions and variations; the number that holds is the written quote after a site measure.

What moves a driveway rate

Driveways are priced by the square metre, but the metre rate is not one number. Five things move it, and an honest quote itemises all of them.

Size. The truck, the crew and the day cost the same for a short widening as for a full driveway, so small pours carry a higher rate. An extension poured alongside a replacement borrows its mobilisation and comes in cheaper.

Removal. Breaking out the old surface is its own line: pavers come out fastest, reinforced concrete slowest. It is quoted up front, never sprung as a variation.

Access and slope. A pour the truck can back up to is the cheapest kind. When the concrete has to travel, by pump or by barrow, the labour bill grows with every metre, which is why slope and tight access add roughly a tenth to a fifth to the price.

Finish. The price ladder runs broom grey, then oxide colour, then exposed aggregate. What you are paying for at each step is the surface alone: every rung sits on the identical base, steel and thickness, which is the part of the job worth paying for first.

Ground. Beachside sand compacts well but must actually be compacted; hinterland clay moves between seasons and asks more of the base and the joint layout. Ground that needs imported base material is identified at the site measure.

Estates change the arithmetic

In Aura and Harmony the design covenants generally rule out plain grey, which moves those driveways into the coloured and exposed aggregate rows of the table above. Budget from those rows if you are building in either estate, and check the design guidelines for your release.

Questions

Pricing questions

Why do driveway rates start at $100 per m2?

That is the confirmed floor for supply and install through this site: excavation, base, steel, a 25 MPa pour, finishing and joint cutting by one crew. Rates below that level usually mean something under the slab has been left out.

Why do small pours cost more per square metre?

Because the fixed costs of a pour, the truck booking, the crew day, the gear, land on fewer metres. A 20 m2 widening carries them alone; a 60 m2 driveway spreads them thin. That is why pairing a small pour with a bigger one is the single cheapest way to buy it.

What makes one driveway quote cheaper than another?

Nearly always something under the surface: base skimped, mesh downgraded, or millimetres shaved off the slab. On handover day the driveways look identical; the difference arrives with the second or third wet season. Get base, mesh and thickness in writing from anyone quoting, then hold them against the build standard published here.

Does removing the old driveway cost extra?

Yes, breaking out and carting the old surface adds $35 to $45 per m2 depending on what is there, and it is itemised in the written quote rather than appearing as a variation on the day.

Are council fees included?

No, and most jobs never meet one: a crossover that fits the council checklist carries no permit and no fee in either council area. On the rare non standard crossover, the council charges its own application fee, resets it every financial year, and your quote itemises it separately so you can see what is council and what is concrete.
